Introduction
Introduction Social Work has been present in the human society in any form throughout the human history. In the older times, the philanthropists used to help the poor and deserving people. This profession evolved on the felt needs of the society when the human society transformed from agregarian to industrial. Due to over population and industrialization the human being had to depend upon group life. With the promotion of the welfare state the responsibility of the welfare of the human beings was delegated by the state and the government. The religion also continued to motivate the people towards the voluntary social work. The role of the social worker is constantly expanding into innovative service fields wherever a compassionate response to human need is indicated. The profession of social work is dedicated to meet the diverse social services needed to individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. In modern times, technical development, mechanical life and urbanization of population have found the informal method of social work insufficient and irrelevant. Due to this reason the governments had to introduce and adopt new methods of social work. These new methods are recognized as a professional social work.  The  Department of Social Work started its Master Degree Program in Social Work in the year 2003. The Master degree program prepares graduates for work in their chosen field of concentration and continues to develop the skills required to perform clinical assessments, manage large caseloads, take on supervisory roles, and explore new ways of drawing upon social services to meet the needs of society. Duration of master’s degree program is 2 years including field work. For admission into the Master’s program, Bachelor’s degree with Social Work as an elective subject is a pre-requisite. The Department also commenced its BS 4-years program in 2006 which aims at making students adept in social work practices.
What is SocialworkY?
Social Work is relatively a newly born academic discipline and profession. It is a problem-solving process. It is not merely charity, but it is a profession in which a social worker assists the clients to solve their problems to attain satisfaction in life. In this profession the services are provided objectively and systematically for the well-being of people and societies.
Need and Inportance of Social Wrok
Need and Importance of Social Work in Pakistan The professional social work is the need of the hour especially, for Pakistan. Due to ongoing socio-economic and geo-strategic circumstances our society is undergoing complex problems. These problems demand planned and coordinated efforts to solve the problems on long term basis. This is only possible through the application of professional social work and social worker rather than voluntary and charitable social work. The professional social work is important to solve the social problems on sustainable basis. As we need doctors, engineers and bankers etc, we need professional social workers who can make Pakistan a real welfare state. Our nation is generous enough and gives billions of rupees in charity. The problem is that neither this given charity is used scientifically nor the responsible institutions are working professionally. To improve the efficiency of the welfare institutions such as Zakat, Usher and Bait-ul-Mal etc there is a great need to employ professional social workers to run these institutions effectively.
Mission
Our mission is to prepare social work students at the bachelor and master level to become professional workers who have the knowledge and skills to improve the quality of life of individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities throughout the region, nation and the world. This is accomplished by providing a high- quality, comprehensive, learner-centered educational experience focused on the responsibilities of citizenship. The department is committed to promote the strengths of diversity through education, research and service, while maintaining a particular focus on the down trodden communities. Interdisciplinary collaboration and advocacy are emphasized to address social injustice toward economically disadvantaged and long- under-served groups. The creation of a culture of research that builds the capacity to evaluate and apply evidence- based research to practice is central to this mission. Additionally, an ability to assess practice and policy effectiveness and disseminate new knowledge to guide policy and practice is a core value of the department.
